Annual dewpond survey by The Friends of Wolstonbury today.

Two tasks were undertaken today by The Friends of Wolstonbury : the annual pond species survey and removing Ragwort from the hill -- filling the trailer above.
Margaret and Hilary undertaking some serious pond dipping and identification of larvae; dragonfly, caddis fly, and aquatic moths etc., (see http://davehubbleecology.blogspot.co.uk/2010/11/britains-aquatic-moths.html for info' on aquatic moths).
Among the damselflies were the Azure Damselfly Coenagrion puella above,
Common Blue Damselfly mature male, Enallagma cyathigerum
and a male Blue-tailed Damselfly, Ischnura elegans.

Then a female Common Darter, Sympetrum striolatum.
 A hogweed bonking beetle.

 Dragonfly larva.

There is always very much more work than these volunteers can execute and new members are sorely needed and welcomed.  You benefit from: the satisfaction of nature conservation, great exercise and the companionship of like-minded enthusiasts.  Please see http://www.wolstonbury.com/dates.htm for future events.
